How to play

Guess the Language is a listening game: you hear a short clip of studio-quality speech and name the language — or, in the final levels, the speaker's country. Ten levels, five questions each, three lives for the whole run. Here is everything the game does, in order.

  1. 1

    Listen to the clip

Every question plays a studio-quality clip generated with a licensed speech-synthesis model from scripts written for this game — never the device's own text-to-speech voices. It starts automatically; if your phone blocks autoplay, tap the ▶ PLAY AUDIO button. You can hit Replay as often as you like, but replaying forfeits the speed bonus for that question.

  2. 2

    Answer within 11 seconds

The countdown starts only once the clip has finished playing, so you always hear the whole sample. Letting the timer run out counts as a wrong answer and costs a life.

  3. 3

    Pick one of four options

Wrong options are never random: they are languages that genuinely sound close to the target. Higher levels demand more closely related options, so the same four-button interface gets much harder as you climb.

  4. 4

Three lives for the whole run

You get 3 lives for the entire run, not per level. They carry over from level to level and never refill. Lose all three and the run ends — the next run restarts at Level 1 with 0 points and 3 fresh lives.

  5. 5

    Clear 5 questions to advance

Each level is 5 questions. Get at least 3 right to clear it and unlock the next one. Your highest unlocked level is remembered even after a game over.

  6. 6

    Chase speed and streak bonuses

Answer within 2 seconds for +50, within 4 for +25 and within 6 for +10 on top of the 100 base points. Consecutive correct answers add a growing streak bonus: +25 at 2, +50 at 3, +100 at 5 and +250 at 10.

  7. 7

    Levels 8-10 switch to accents

From Level 8 the question changes from 'which language?' to 'which country is this speaker from?' — US vs UK vs Australian English, Spain vs Mexico vs Argentina Spanish, France vs Quebec French, Brazil vs Portugal Portuguese, Egypt vs Morocco vs Lebanon Arabic. Every option is a variant of the same language, so only the accent can decide it.

  8. 8

Endless Mode unlocks at Level 10

Clear Level 10 to unlock Endless Mode: no question limit, difficulty rising every three questions, mixed language and accent rounds, and the same three lives. It is where leaderboard runs are won.

Common questions

Do I need to speak the language?

No. You are matching sound patterns — rhythm, vowel colour, consonant clusters and intonation. Most strong players speak one or two of the languages in the game at most.

What if a clip does not play?

The game validates every clip's audio before showing it and silently swaps in a different question if the media fails on your device, so you are never scored on a silent clip.

Can I turn the sound off?

Yes — the speaker button on the clip card mutes the game. With sound off the answer timer starts immediately, so it is best used to pause the audio rather than to play.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

By score, with daily, weekly and all-time views. Score combines correct answers, speed bonuses and streak bonuses, so fast, uninterrupted runs rank highest.
